Goodspeed Bicycle Co.

Goodspeed Bicycle Co. is a shed-like structure in Canberra’s NewActon precinct where David Alcorn and Myles Chandler (with whom we partnered on Mocan and Green Grout) design, hand make and repair bicycles. In Italian towns, people get around on bikes made by local bicycle companies. There’s a sense of ownership and pride in this tradition as well as a commitment to quality and charm; in this way, Goodspeed Bicycle Co. are making Canberra’s bikes.

The Goodspeed shed sits on crown land, which made the process of bringing it into being an arduous one; incongruous perhaps to the size and complexity of the proposal but worthwhile for what we understood as the beauty of the structure and benefit to the NewActon community. It is a retail service that is a natural match for the people in NewActon’s Nishi building who are environmentally conscious and inclined to geek out on cycling culture.
