Molonglo

NewActon Pavilion is formed from the adapted buildings and grounds of the old Hotel Acton, a late 1920s temporary housing facility for newly arrived employees of the capital. The Pavilion sits at the very centre of NewActon. Surrounded by new multi-level buildings of significant scale, it’s a grounding piece of architecture, a place to pause and meander through when traversing east to west, north to south.

The heritage structure was carefully restored inside and out to provide an 80-room boutique hotel, three restaurants, offices and creative workspaces. The building is enveloped by gardens including the eastern and western courtyards and the John Avery Gardens, all regularly used for gatherings.

Burnt by fire in June 2011, the central areas of the Pavilion were restored a second time. The charred walls were retained, adding another layer to the history of the place.
