Buildings 33 and 34

‘In our effort to turn the city into an attractive living and working environment, we have also driven the industry out of the city. Productive areas disappear into the outskirts of the city or to low-wage countries. The city is turning into a place of consumption, without production. That is problematic.’ BOZAR, A Good City Has Industry (2017).

Buildings 33 and 34 are recently completed vast industrial sheds at Dairy Road. In many cities, industry and production (which enables cultural and commercial life) are seen as low-value and undesirable. Spaces for these types of activities are usually pushed to the outskirts or offshore. Dairy Road has always been a neighbourhood where things are made, not just consumed, and Buildings 33 and 34 are vital new spaces for this activity.

Despite their industrial function, careful material choices and thoughtful detailing bring unexpected beauty to the warehouses, valuing the work that happens inside. Minimally finished materials, such as aluminium, and raw materials, such as zinc, have been used, while exposed aggregate on external panels introduce texture. The interiors are an assemblage of raw and simple materials and finishes that layer together to soften the spaces. Native landscaping surrounds the buildings. Given their location adjacent to the Jerrabomberra wetlands, sensitivity to local wildlife has been considered through adaptive sensors for external lighting, resulting in warm light that mimics the moon.
